Promoting Microbiology in Scotland

SCOTTISH MICROBIOLOGY SOCIETY

FEMS

The Federation of European Microbiological Societies is devoted to the promotion of microbiology in Europe. FEMS currently links 46 microbiological societies, encouraging joint activities, facilitating communication amongst microbiologist, supporting meetings and laboratory courses, providing fellowships, and publishing journals and books.

The Scottish Microbiology Society Became a full member of FEMS in November 2003. A particular advantage for individual SMS members is that they can now apply to FEMS for competitive research fellowships for which there is a very good chance of success. Typically, grants of 3,000 Euro would be available for members intending to visit a research laboratory in another European country for a period of 3-months. Applications require to be made through the FEMS delegate of the SMS, currently Prof Graeme Walker, University of Abertay Dundee.

Other advantages for SMS are that the Society can apply for support through FEMS for future symposia and scientific meetings, which the committee are always keen to support.

Scottish Microbiology Society members automatically become members of FEMS when annual subscriptions are received by the Treasurer.

If you are interested in receiving the FEMS circular mailer, please contact SMS for information.
